HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I hope the new year has been wonderful for you so far.
I will never forget 2014. It was an incredible year. Awesome, crazy, heartbreaking and life-changing. When I think about who I was when the year began and who I am now, one month into the new year, I’m amazed at how much can change in one short year. It was a year full of amazing opportunities and growth.
WHAT IS one little word?
Two years ago, I read Shelley Smith’s post about her One Little Word for 2014 — Still. I loved the idea of choosing a single word to look to and draw inspiration from throughout the year.
After hours (and hours) of driving and thinking, the one little word that kept coming to my mind for 2015 was Forward.
In my mid-30’s, I expected to feel settled into the life I’d imagined for myself. I didn’t. I expected to feel at home in my own skin. To have a good idea of who I was. I didn’t.
In our 30’s, and 7 years into our marriage, my husband and I found ourselves feeling irritable. Overworked, overtired, unappreciated, underwater, disconnected and very unhappy.
It’s surprising and unsettling to find yourself feeling alone in a room with the people you love most.
‘Lost’ in your own home.
Angry, heartbroken, hopeless, and blind to your blessings.
We navigated personal and family crisis as well as we could, reconciling our expectations with our reality.
We had to consider what brought us real joy, and what we simply couldn’t live without.
There were times when success felt like failure. When I felt upside down.
Invaluable lessons and ‘whispers’ always came in moments of stillness. And, if I was honest with myself and could say that I was doing my very best, hope and peace sprouted from that.
After several months, I’m thrilled to say my husband and I are creating the life we want, together. And, it feels incredible.
Our past can imprison us, or refine us. I choose to let the past die, and let the anger go. I will move Forward.
